The first years

The AWT was founded in 1948 with the purpose to change the empirical and traditional knowledge about heat treatment into a systematically science context and make it come practically for its users. Co-founder and the first chairman was Paul Riebensahm. In 1950 the Institute for hardening technology (today the Foundation Institute for Materials Science), the institute of the AWT, was founded.

Already in the year 1941 the first Congress on Heat Treatment (HK) took place in Berlin with the aim to advance and to professionalize the transfer of experiences in heat treatment and hardening technology. Today the HK is the yearly most important congress on heat treatment, materials science, process engineering, and manufacturing technology in Germany.

1955 the first Material Chapter in  Berlin started its work. In the following years the circle grows up unto 17 material chapters today, who transfer the results of the AWT-research into the local practice. The work of the material chapters are accompanied by AWT-members with a high level on honorary dedication. The material chapters also offer a big choice on high range advanced training on technical problems.

The HTM Journal for Materials and Heat Treatment was published in 1956 the first time. Therewith the AWT became a scientific public organ to advance the results of research. In the HTM the lectures of the Hk and diverse international congresses and events are published. Also the reports (with English summary) of the research projects of the Institute for Materials Science (IWT), news and information about the work of the AWT-committees and special items about research and development in other institutes and industrial practice. The HTM is published in German language.

Research today

The research projects of the Institute of Materials Science (IWT) are accompanied by the AWT-committees and the scientific boarder from both associations. The work of these committees is essential for the quality management of scientific work. The present 25 committees with some technical specialized subgroups are reflecting the diversity, continuity and interdisciplinary of research today. The committees guarantee not only for the nearness to industrial production but also many of their members of the committees itself are publishing their own books and articles on technical tasks and standards.
