In many areas of thermochemical heat treatment of steel, carbonitriding has emerged as a process for highly stressed components, in particular for components subjected to overrolling or comparable loads. In the past, carbonitriding was mainly used to increase the hardness or hardenability of unalloyed steels. For this purpose, a fixed percentage of ammonia was added to a carburizing atmosphere at relatively low temperatures of approx. 870 °C. The ammonia was added to the carbonitrided steel.
Newly developed gas carbonitriding processes now allow the targeted setting of combined carbon and nitrogen profiles in the workpiece surface layer. The advantage of these new processes and their control is that high carbonitride and retained austenite contents can be set in a targeted manner that far exceeds the usual level of retained austenite and precipitates. The seminar is intended to provide users from the gear industry in the fields of heat treatment and quality assurance, as well as design engineers, with examples of treatments of case-hardened steels by carbonitriding in theory and practice. It will be shown how the heat treatment and atmospheric parameters affect the properties of components, and how these should be set and controlled. Furthermore, the required plant technology and practical experience in the application of carbonitriding will be reported.
