Planned Seminar

Microstructure and metallography of steels

In the seminar, the fundamentals of metallography are taught and the general relationships between the various structural elements and their properties are explained. Both the mode of operation and the imaging methods in the light and electron microscope are dealt with.

The properties of metallic materials are essentially determined by the microstructure, which usually only becomes visible in the microscope through appropriate metallographic detection etching. The microstructure, also called microstructure, includes the mixture of crystallites, the type, size and shape of the different phases, the grain boundaries as well as defects such as inclusions and pores. The material steel in particular, with its large number of possible alloy compositions, can be specifically adjusted in terms of its properties, also due to the almost unique variety of microstructures.

Metallographic microstructural analysis is widely used for quality assurance and damage investigation.

In the seminar, the fundamentals of metallography are taught and the general relationships between the various structural elements and their properties are explained. Both the mode of operation and the imaging methods in the light and electron microscope will be discussed. Hardness testing and methods are explained to complement the microstructural assessment. Each seminar participant can submit a sample in advance, which will be evaluated anonymously during the seminar.

The seminar is aimed at interested persons from the fields of development, design, manufacturing, materials engineering and quality assurance who wish to extend, deepen or refresh their knowledge.
