Dimensional and shape change in production

Dimensional and shape changes - also known as distortion - that occur during the production of metallic components cause high additional costs, as they lead to rework or even scrap. The work of the Collaborative Research Center "Distortion Engineering" has clearly shown that the causes of distortion can be present throughout the entire manufacturing chain. Nevertheless, dimensional and shape changes are a daily annoyance in every hardening shop, because dissatisfied customers assume that the delivered component was perfectly manufactured and that the hardening shop is solely responsible for the distortion.

The seminar is intended to contribute to a better assessment of the delay risk during order acceptance or process planning against the background of the component history and also its design. Furthermore, measures to control warpage in production are to be taught. To this end, the seminar is divided into four blocks. First, the fundamentals of warpage are discussed. In the 2nd and 3rd blocks, examples of warpage potential in production chains for through-hardening (ring-shaped components) and case hardening will be presented. In the last part, plant concepts for low-warpage case hardening will be presented. The AWT seminar is aimed at heat treaters and materials engineers as well as designers, formers and machinists. Participation is confirmed by a certificate.
